  15. squirrel, Bullwinkle the moose, Mountie Dudley Do-Right and the
  16. sinister spies Boris Badenov and Natasha Fataly; of kidney
  17. cancer; in Los Angeles. The high-camp cartoon characters
  18. invented by Ward and his partners gained a cult following among
  19. adults from the late 1950s to the '70s and, later, during the
  20. cartoons' reruns. "There's only one way for a hero to go,
  21. whereas you can have a lot of fun with a villain," Ward once
  22. declared. "Boris Badenov, for example, can say, `Somebody down
  23. there likes me.'"
